SALISBURY, N.C. – Catawba put six players in double figures in posted a 90-78 win over Anderson in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. It marked the first game of the season for both teams and avenged a season sweep of Catawba by Anderson last season.
Ace Carter led Catawba with 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Terrence Whitfield tallied 15 points with Carter Phillips adding a dozen. Freshmen Bernard Pelote and Caleb Robinson also scored 12 points with Ben Bowen collecting 11 points and seven rebounds.
Pelote shared team-high honors with eight rebounds with point guard Marcus Burwell. Burwell scored nine points and handed out 11 assists.
Quin Nottingham posted 22 points for Anderson, going 13-of-14 at the line. Kai Rivers picked up 12 points and nine rebounds, while Josh Livingston tossed in 10.
The teams swapped the lead four times with four ties in the early going, but Whitfield hit consecutive baskets, the later a three-pointer, to put the Catawba Indians up for good at 30-27 with 4:04 to go in the opening half. Catawba would hold a 39-37 edge at the break.
Catawba grabbed its first double-digit lead at 56-46 on a three-pointer by Carter with 13:49 left. Anderson stayed close and were within four after a pair of Nottingham free throws with 8:26 remaining. Robinson and Phillips followed with layups and when Phillips converted a three-point play with 6:03 to go, Catawba was back up by a dozen at 75-63.
The Indians capped 48.6% of its shots to just 35.9% for Anderson. The Trojans did the bulk of their damage at the line, canning 27-of-34 attempts. Catawba hit 35 field goals with 10 from behind the arc.
Catawba is slated to travel to Mars Hill on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
