TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team was unable to overcome the Crusaders in the Conference Carolinas Volleyball Championship Pool Play as the Hawks battled with North Greenville and Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the Hawks offensively with 25 kills and 30 digs as Rosa-Martinez recorded a double-double against Belmont Abbey.
Hannah Sladick tallied 20 kills on the afternoon to go along with seven assisted blocks. Katie Houston notched a double-double against Belmont Abbey posting 19 kills and 20 digs on the afternoon.
Ciara Ortega nearly posted two double-doubles with 31 assists and 13 digs against Belmont Abbey and 24 assists and nine digs against North Greenville.
Anamarie Colon-Calero recorded 11 kills, while Nyah Powers contributed with seven kills and six assisted blocks.
Match 1
Chowan 1, North Greenville 3
Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted the first kill for the Hawks as NGU led 11-5. Anamarie Colon-Calero and a pair of kills by Hannah Sladick closed the gap to 14-8.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez picked up a pair of kills along with a kill by Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston as NGU took the opening set 25-13.
Chowan would take the second set 25-23 as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted five kills in the set along with four kills by Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston.
The Hawks opened up the third set with a 5-0 run before NGU went on an 8-1 run to lead 12-8. The Crusaders finished off the set with a 10-0 run to take the set 25-12. Katie Houston and Hannah Sladick posted two kills in the set.
Chowan could not get their footing in the match as NGU took the fourth set and match with a 25-14 victory.
Match 2
Chowan 2, Belmont Abbey 3
Chowan raced out to a 12-1 lead in the opening set aided by Belmont Abbey attacking errors. The advantage continued to stay in the Hawks’ favor moving the score to 24-7. Anixa Rosa-Martinez finished off the set with a kill for the 25-13 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair as Nyah Powers posted three kills in the set. BAC would take the set despite a late rally by the Hawks, 25-22.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston led the Hawks to a 26-24 set three victory with six and five kills respectively.
Katie Houston and Anamarie Colon-Calero led the Hawks to an early lead in set four. Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick pushed the Hawks forward before the Crusaders rallied to even the score and take the lead. BAC went on a 7-2 run to end the set and move the match to a fifth set, 25-20.
Hannah Sladick forced a rally by the Hawks to even the score in the set at 7-all with a pair of kills. Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero kept the Hawks close, 13-12, with a kill each. BAC posted the final two points to take the match.
2021 SEASON
Chowan finished with a 1-11 overall record. The Hawks battled in all but two matches this season picking up at least one set in 10 matches this season and three matches went to a fifth set.
