ROCK HILL, S.C. – Queens’ Melanie Welsing was voted the 2020-21 South Atlantic Conference Female Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Tuesday. The Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards are selected by a vote of the league’s athletic directors.
Welsing, a Junior from Richmond, Ky., finished a remarkable season as the first athlete from the women’s track & field team to win a National Championship since 2016 and she is just the third in program history. The All-American earned the title clocking a time of 13.43 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles which is a new program record. She also finished first in 100-meter hurdles at the SAC Championship meet, earning 24 points for Queens. Welsing was most recently named the Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year as well.
In addition to her National Championship title this season, she placed first in triple jump and second in both the 100m hurdles and the 100m in the Hub-City Invitational. At the Mount Olive First Chance Meet, she placed third overall in the women’s Heptathlon.
